No more games at Our Lady of Fatima High School

By Mike Szostak

WARREN -- Our Lady of Fatima, the Catholic school that hundreds of motorists pass each day as they travel Route 136, will close for good in June because of declining enrollment and rising costs.

The modest sports program ended last month when the 1-1 softball team had to cancel the rest of its season because it could not field a team.

Sophomore basketball player Brian McParlin scored 810 points in his two years with the Tigers and will play for St. Raphael next season. Junior Alexandria Wall did it all in three years as a volleyball and softball player, dramatist and class president. She will attend St. Raphael for her final year of high school.

Read the complete story Monday in The Journal and the eEdition.

Engvall is Athlete of the Week

By John Gillooly

Barrington baseball player Ben Engvall is this week's Providence Journal GameTime Athlete of the Week.

Engvall was the hero of the day Thursday as Barrington ended Hendricken's run as the only undefeated baseball team in the state with a 1-0 victory over the Hawks. The junior pitcher shutout the Hawks on seven hits then drove-in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Watch-out for Barrington in the playoffs

By John Gillooly

At 6-8 the Barrington High baseball team may have only the 14th best record among the 24 Interscholastic League Division I teams.

But after what happened Thursday nobody can fault Barrington fans for thinking come playoff time the Eagles have the ability to beat anybody en route to the state title.

Thursday afternoon the Eagles became the first team in the state to beat Hendericken this season with a 1-0 victory over the previously undefeated Hawks. It was the second time this season the Eagles have dropped a front-running team from the undefeated ranks.

Three weeks ago the Eagles handed North Providence its first loss with a 7-2 victory over the Cougars. To date that is North Providence's only loss in 13 Interscholastic League games.

Thursday's victory over Hendricken completed a week in which the Eagles not only beat the only previously undefeated team, but also defeated the defending state champion. On Tuesday, the Eagles posted a 6-3 victory over Cranston West, the defending Division I state champion.

Hendricken baseball suffers first loss

By Corey Bourassa
Barrington's Ben Engvall hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive home the only run of the game as the Eagles defeated previously undefeated Hendricken, 1-0, in a Division I-Central game.

Dave Scott opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and Ben Schwartz doubled him to third to set the stage for Engvall's walk-off sac fly.

Barrington was in position to win the game because of Engvall's seven-hit shutout.

Hendricken starter Tom Pannone had a strong performance of his own, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out 12, but he wasn't around for the decision.

The Eagles improve to 6-8 and the Hawks drop to 13-1.

Go, Donaldson!

By Jim Donaldson
First of all, I'm not related to Jared Donaldson.

So it's not family loyalty that makes me think it's nice that this talented 15-year-old wants to come home to Rhode Island from South America to play some high school tennis.

This quote from the kid in Mike Szostak's excellent story in Wednesday's paper sums up the situation for me:

"I've never been part of a team where you care about everybody winning," Donaldson said after playing a match for Ponaganset High. "This isn't all about me. You have to win four points. When I'm on the court, it's all about me. When I'm off, it's all about them I can root and cheer."

You don't have to cheer for him.

He will, after all, be a heavy favorite to win the state singles title.

But there's certainly no reason to hassle him.

      He's only 15.

     He grew up in Chepachet.

He's spent 12 of the last 16 months living and training in Buenos Aires, Argentina, working to become a world-class player.

      We should welcome him home.

Internationally ranked junior joins Ponaganset tennis team

By Mike Szostak
FOSTER -- Jared Donaldson, a 15-year-old from Chepachet who is No. 241 in the International Tennis Federation junior rankings, joined the Ponaganset High School tennis team last week and played his first dual match on Monday.

Donaldson has been home-schooled since sixth grade because of his training and travel schedules. His arrival just before the qualifying for the state tennis tournament generated questions and protests from coaches, parents and tennis officials, but the Rhode Island Interscholastic League determined that he complies with its rules for eligibility. He could be the top seed when the tournament resumes May 18.

Read about Donaldson's RIIL debut and his compliance with the rules Wednesday in The Journal and the eEdition.
