PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- RI lawmakers are taking up legislation designed to safeguard student athletes against concussions. A Senate panel plans to vote on legislation that would require annual training for coaches on how to recognize and respond to sports-related head injuries. It would also require schools to administer a preliminary cognitive test to student athletes before the start of the sports season. Students who suffer a possible concussion later on would retake the test, and health care professionals would compare the two tests to assess the severity of the injury. Sen. Walter Felag is the bill's sponsor. The Warren Democrat says it's important that coaches know how to recognize concussions to prevent needless serious injury to student athletes. No vote in the full Senate is scheduled. The House is considering similar legislation. |
