There may be only one division in the Interscholastic League girls hockey ranks this winter, but there will be two state champions.
When Lincoln School informed the Interscholastic League that it would not compete in girls hockey this winter, League officials decided to combine what had been a nine-team league with two divisions in previous years into a one-division, eight-team league for the 2009-10 season.
When it comes to playoffs, however, there will be two separate tournaments.
In a rather unusual playoff format, the top two regular-season finishers will play a best-of-three Division I state title series. Also the third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place regular-season finishers will play in a four-team Division II state tournament, with best-of-three series in both the semifinal and final rounds.
The eight teams in the league this winter will be Mount St. Charles, Bay View, La Salle, Barrington, North Smithfield, Burrillville, Toll Gate and Cranston.
