Boys soccer playoffs beginning Tuesday
Thirty-two teams will begin battling for championships in three divisions Tuesday with the start of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Boys Soccer Playoffs.
In Division I, top-seeded La Salle (17-1), second-seeded Barrington (16-1-1), third-seeded Chariho (15-3) and fourth-seeded Central Falls (11-4-2) have first-round byes. Barrington is the defending champion.
Preliminary round games Tuesday will match No. 9 Cumberlalnd (8-9-1) at No. 8 Portsmouth (8-8-2) at 6:30; No. 12 Coventry (4-14-0) at No. 5 Bishop Hendricken (11-6) at 6 p.m.; No. 11 Mount St. Charles (6-9-2) at No. 6 South Kingstown (9-6-3) at 6 p.m., and No. 10 Hope (7-8-3) at No. 7 North Kingstown (9-6-3) at 4:30 p.m.
Quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday afternoon at La Salle and Thursday night at Central Falls, Chariho and Barrington. The Met Life Soccer Classic semifinals will be Nov. 3 at Cranston Stadium and the final Nov. 7 at Rhode Island College.
In Division II, first-round byes went to East Greenwich (15-0-1), Westerly (13-2-1), Shea (15-1) and Smithfield (10-3-3). Lincoln is the defending champ.
Three preliminary games are scheduled for Tuesday: Narragansett (6-7-3) at Tolman (7-7-2) at 6 p.m., Lincoln (7-7-2) at Pilgrim (8-6-2) at 3:30, and Cranston West (6-8-2) at Central (8-5-3) at 3:30. Classical (5-6-5) will play at Middletown (10-4-2) Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Quarterfinals will be Thursday afternoon at Shea, Thursday night at East Greenwich and Westerly and Saturday afternoon at Smithfield. Semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 4 at Bishop Hendricken and the final Nov. 7 at Rhode Island College.
Eight teams will contend for the Division III title. Tiverton is the defending champion.
Fifth-seeded Exeter/West Greenwich (7-5-2) will visit No. 4 St. Raphael (7-4-4) Wednesday at 5 p.m. Sixth-seeded Ponaganaset (5-5-5) will play at No. 3 Prout (9-3-3) Thursday at 3:30. Eighth-seeded Davies (5-8-2) will play at No. 1 Tiverton (10-1-3) Friday at 7 p.m., and No. 7 Burrillville (5-7-3) will visit No. 2 West Warwick (10-2-2) Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 3 at North Smithfield and the final Nov. 7 at Rhode Island College.
