Thanks to the blog FanHouse.com for alerting me to this story of gridiron craziness from Vermont. With 16 seconds left, Otter Valley High School took a 16-14 lead on Mount Mansfield thanks to a late field goal. In the closing seconds, Mount Mansfield managed to advance the ball inside the Otter Valley 30-yard line, thanks to a nifty 32-yard completion. The Mount Mansfield team lined up to try an unlikely 46-yard field goal, which fell well short of the goal posts. Only it didn't fall to the ground -- it fell into the arms of an Otter Valley player, who ran with it for awhile before spiking the ball in celebration. This action resulted in the ball being live, and alert Mount Mansfield junior Jeff Sutherland picked up the ball and ran it into the end zone for the winning touchdown. As Leon Lett could have told the unfortunate Otter Valley player: If your opponent's potential game-winning field goal falls short of the goal posts, just let the thing lie. Here's a local TV video of the play, which occurs at about 1:30 of the broadcast: |
