Our Lady of Fatima High School in Warren has suspended its boys and girls soccer programs this season because not enough students wanted to play.
Joe Parenteau, the director of athletics, has started a co-ed intramural soccer program in the hope of generating sufficient interest so Fatima can field teams in 2010.
"We're trying to keep the sport up. We don't want to lose soccer," Parenteau said.

La Salle's 3-0 victory over Portsmouth last week dropped the Patriots out of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's New England rankings - they were ranked 11th - but that left the door open for 5-0-0 South Kingstown to become ranked.
In the latest poll, La Salle jumped up from seventh to sixth place, and South Kingstown went from unranked to being ranked 14th.

The Barrington boy's soccer team is not only ranked as the second best team in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, but the 6-0-0 defending state champion Eagles are also ranked as the 24th best team in the country.

With the dual meet season set to get underway on Monday, the Barrington girls (108 points) and Hendricken boys (100 points) were the top vote-getters in the first coaches' cross country poll.
Barrington - which last year captured the Metropolitan Division title with an 11-0 record, won the Class B Championship and then finished second to La Salle at the State Championship
Senior Eliza Badeau of Foster (Ponaganset) is the Little East Conference volleyball player of the week for leading Plymouth State to a 4-0 start. The 6-foot middle hitter averaged 4.7 kills per game with 50 kills and an attack percentage of .597. She had double-digit kills in each match with a high of 16 against Ramapo. Freshman Kaitlyn Birrell of Scituate has wasted no time in putting her mark on the Salve Regina soccer program. She is the Commonwealth Coast Conference rookie of the week for the period that ended Sunday for compiling three goals and an assist in three games last week. In fact, according to the latest high school athletics participation study by the National Federation of State High Schools Association, the number of field hockey players in Rhode Island has shrunk from the 2002-03 season to last season, from 631 participants to 617.
