New Providence facility will open for winter sports season


The athletics center at the new Providence Career & Technical Academy will be finished in time for the winter sports season. That's the word from Andre Thibeault, director of school operations and student support for Providence Public Schools.

PROVIDENCE -- As the Classical High School football team scrimmaged against Rogers High of Newport Thursday afternoon at the Al Morro Athletic Complex, the girls tennis team warmed up for a practice match against Mount St. Charles.

Former EG football player Wort injured at Oklahoma


Tom Wort, a University of Oklahoma freshman who played football at East Greenwich High School for two years before moving with his family to New Braunfels, Texas, suffered a torn ACL at practice last week and will miss the 2009 season. Wort was vying for playing time at middle linebacker.

R.I. Lightning holding fast-pitch tryouts this weekend

The Rhode Island Lightning Fastpitch Softball organization is holding tryouts for all age groups (12U, 14U, 16U, 18U) on Saturday (8/22) and Sunday (8/23) at the Mount Pleasant Little League complex (next to Mount Pleasant High School) in Providence, R.I. All girls with birthdates from 1991-1999 are eligible to tryout. All aspects of the game (hitting, fielding, throwing, running) will be evaluated. There is no fee to tryout.

Controversial swimsuits banned from high-school competition

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The National Federation of State High School Associations has banned high-tech swimsuits that it said have been linked to record performances in recent years.

The federation's board on Tuesday adopted a recommendation from the group's swimming and diving rules committee to ban high-tech suits for high school competition, effective immediately.

Scituate's Bouyssou earns fifth-place finish in world judo competiton

Scituate High School sophomore Katelyn Bouyssou has placed fifth in the 48 kg class at judo's Cadet World Championships for 15- to 16-year-olds, held in Budapest, Hungary. Bouyssou competed as an independent wrestler last school year and advanced to the 103-pound semifinals Rhode Island's state meet.

North Kingstown's Beisel finishes fifth in the 400-meter IM in Rome

One day after becoming the first swimmer from the United States to capture a medal at the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome with a third-place finish in the 200-meter backstroke with a personal best time of 2:06.39, Rhode Island's own Olympian Elizabeth Beisel placed fifth in the 400-meter individual medley.
