Beisel reaches 200 backstroke final at World Champiponships

Elizabeth Beisel will race for a medal Saturday in the 200-meter backstroke final at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome.

The 16-year-old North Kingstown High School senior finished fourth in the semifinals Friday after a third-place showing in the preliminary heats. Beisel's time was 2:07.48. She swam a 2:07.98 in the preliminaries.

The final is scheduled for Saturday between noon and 2 p.m. (

She had the fastest qualifying time so it was only natural to assume that Elizabeth Beisel would advance to the semifinals in the 200-meter backstroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome Friday.

Rebels' forward Jones verbally commits to St. Joe's

South Kingstown basketball player Allie Jones has given a verbal commitment to Saint Joseph's University.

Correction: Chariho's Serdakowski holds state hurdles mark

The state record holder in the girls' indoor 60-meter hurdles was incorrectly reported here and in the July 14 edition of the Journal sports section. Quakers' Poggi wins silver and gold at Bay State Games

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - North Kingstown High's Elizabeth Beisel added another national title to her already impressive swimming resume as the Skippers senior-be won the women's 200-meter backstroke title Friday night at the Conoco Phillips National Swimmning Championships.

Thursday night Beisel had won the women's 400-meter indivdiual medley championship.

Beisel finishes second in 400 IM heats at swim championships

North Kingstown's Elizabeth Beisel finished the 400 individual medley this morning in a time of 4:40.61, the second-best time out of 73 swimmers in the heats at the ConocoPhillips National Championships in Indiananapolis. Only Julia Smit, a 21-year-old swimmer at Stanford, finished with a better time this morning.

Laura Sogar of Prout was 34th with a time of 4:54.90, and Kaia Simmons of Moses Brown was 38th at 4:55.25.

Beisel finishes in top five in two events at national swim championships

INDIANAPOLIS - North Kingstown High senior-to-be Elizabeth Beisel continued proving she is one of the top female swimmers in the country as she finished in the top five in two events during the first two days of the U.S. National Swimming Championships.

Wednesday night Beisel finished fourth in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1.00.91. The race was won by Haydey McGregory with a time of 1:00.07.

Ray, Adams earn spots in national golf tourney

Two of the stars of Barrington High's state championship golf team will represent Rhode Island in the Big I Trusted Choice national golf championship.
