Springer, Strawderman set state marks, take MVP honors; Hawks win team title at Hendricken Invitational
Former Journal sports writer Bob Leddy provides the following recap and results from today's Hendricken Invitational:
Westerly senior Andrew Springer and Cranston West junior James Strawderman each broke Rhode Island state records yesterday at the Hendricken Invitational track meet for boys. Springer won the 3,000-meter run in 8 minutes, 23.3 seconds, eliminating the previous mark of 8:34.2, set in 2006 by Hendricken's Tom Webb. Strawderman bettered his own state record in the pole vault, with a winning height of 15 feet, 3 inches (4.64 meters). His previous standard was 15-0.25 (4.58). Springer was named the meet's Track MVP. Strawderman took Field Event MVP honors.
