Previous boys' state pole vault record held by two

A clarification needs to be made regarding the mention of James Strawderman's state record in Sunday's story on the Cranston West pole vaulter.

The Falcons senior's state record vault of 15 feet-0.25 inches (4.58 meters) at the Rick Schomp Invitational earlier this month at South Kingstown bettered the previous state mark of 15 feet (4.57 meters), which was co-held by Barrington's Brad Holtz and Middletown's Jacob Mathews.

Holtz set what was considered an all-time state record of 15 feet at the 2004 Bay State Games.

Mathews set a Rhode Island Interscholastic League state record when he cleared the same height en route to becoming the 2008 state pole vault champion.

As Rick Marshall of the R.I. Track & Field Foundation points out - and as track fans will see when they pick up a program at this year's Outdoor Track & Field Championships - state marks are classified one of two ways:

* RIIL State (i.e., top mark at an in-season performance up to and including the New Englands, provided the athlete was representing his/her school)

* All-Time (if a superior mark exists, as performed by a R.I. high school student through all post-season meets, including instances where the school is not represented)
