Outdoor track class meet recaps
Former Journal sports writer Bob Leddy sends along this recap of the seven Class Championships held throughout the state on Saturday:

HENDRICKEN, BARRINGTON, WESTERLY, E. GREENWICH TAKE BOYS' CLASS CROWNS

May 25 - - Last weekend's Class Championships - seven meets held throughout the state - each produced some good performances. Here's a brief recap:
Girls' Class A
The Rams easily took team honors with 156 points, and were buoyed by Emily Barrett's wins in the 100-meter high (15.5) and 300-meter intermediate hurdles (46.2). Senior Jean Christensen gave La Salle 10 points with her 10:50.3 victory in the 3000. Coventry's talented Erin Wheeler took two: she downed Erin Carmone, of East Providence, to win the 1500 meters in 4:45.9 (Carmone second in 4:48.2) , and beat out the Falcons' Arianna Colella to capture the 800 (2:21.5 to Collela's 2:24.5, good for second spot). Woonsocket's Britt Lawson was a double winner in the throwing circle. Lawson threw the hammer 45.79 meters (150 feet, 3 inches) to take the gold medal, and won the shot with a put of 10.51 (34.6). La Salle took all three relays.
Girls' Class B
Barrington was strong, but the Rebels were stronger still as coach Joyce Harvey's team racked up 176 total points to the Eagles' 129. Senior Amanda Norman was a double winner for S.K. She clocked 12.9 to win the 100 meters, and captured the 200 in 26.4. The Rebs' Molly Reilly was victorious in both hurdles events; she went 15.4 to take the 100-meter highs, and 45.3 in winning the intermediates. South Kingstown also won all three relays. Barrington's Nicole Heinl continued her winning ways with the 4-kilogram hammer. Heinl threw 44.27 meters (145-3) to claim the win. Barrington's Abigail Jones (last year's state runner-up in the 3000 meters) won the Class B race in 10:47.6. Teammate Sarah Barry took the 1500 in 4:41.2.
Girls' Class C
Smithfield downed East Greenwich, 205-132, to win the class team championship. The Sentinels' Katie Meinertz won the 3000 in 11:09.6, and teammate Michelle Krol took the 200 (28.0) and the long jump (4.82m/15-9.75). The Avengers' Laura Duff won the 800 in 2:25.9.
Boys' Class A
It was Hendricken all the way, with 210 team points. The Hawks got wins in the hammer, javelin, high jump, 400, 3000, and two relays wins (4x400, 4x800). Gama, the state's top hammer man, unloaded the 12-pound ball 64.21 meters (210 feet, 8 inches). In the pole vault, Cranston West's James Strawderman cleared 4.50 meters (14-9). Strawderman is the state record-holder in the event at a height of 4.58 (15 feet, ΒΌ inch). The Hawks' Jake Sienko's 9:08.3 was good for gold in the 3000 meters.
Boys' Class B
Barrington out pointed South Kingstown, 131-121, to win the title in this class. Chariho finished a strong third with 118 points. The Chargers' Antonio Asermelly was the gold medalist in the shot (15.03 meters/49 feet, 4 inches), and the discus (40.10/131-7). The Eagles Rocket, Mike Read, blazed to an 11.2 in the 100 meters. (Read has already clocked a 10.5 in the event). He also took the 200 in 22.9. Central's Craig Amado won the triple jump with a distance of 13.46 meters (44-2), and won the 400 in 50.6. The Rebels' Dan McCloskey won the 3000 in 9:04.0, and teammate Shawn Stadnick took the 800 in 2:01.3.
Boys' Class C
Westerly's phenomenal Andrew Springer clocked a state-leading 3:55.6 to win the 1500 meters; he went 1:56.7 in the 800 and ran a leg on the Bulldogs' winning 4x800 relay (8:24.9). Westerly captured the team prize with 148 points. Mike Intreiti was the other big story out of this meet. The Bulldog senior put the shot a winning 16.18 meters (53 feet, 1 inch), which is the state's top put so far. Ponaganset, which finished second in team scoring with 98 points, got 10 from Nick Keeling in the 200 (23.4) and its winning 4x400 relay (45.0).
Boys' Class D
The Avengers gathered 146 points, over Classical's 133, to take the team championship. E.G.'s Mark Feigen mined gold in two events; he took the 800 in 1:56.5, and the 1500 in 3:59.6. The Avs' Nick Ross was victorious in the 3000 with a time of 9:29.4. The Purple's Josh Faboyede won the hammer at 61.16 meters (200 feet, 8 inches) and the discus with a toss of 47.77 (156-9). Jean-Daniel Roussel, of St. Raphael, won both the 100 meters (11.0) and the 200 (23.1). East Greenwich took two of three relays (4x100, 4x400) and Classical won the 4x800 (8:52.1).
