Ex-Oaker Mattoon named RIC softball MVP

Donielle Mattoon, a former three-sport star at Coventry and now a sophomore shortstop at Rhode Island College, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Anchorwomen's softball team at RIC's annual spring banquet, held earlier this month at the Quonset Point Officer's Club.

Playing in all 47 games this season and starting in all but one of them, Mattoon batted .452 (57-for-126) with 43 runs scored, six doubles, eight triples, six home runs, 29 RBI and three stolen bases. She owned a .770 slugging percentage, a .486 on-base percentage and a .915 fielding percentage, all of which helped Rhode Island College compile a 42-7 record and capture its fifth consecutive Little East Conference Regular Season Championship, its fourth straight LEC Tournament title and the second seed in the 2009 NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament New England Regional Championship.

A third-team All-New England and second-team All-Little East Conference selection, Mattoon was one of five Anchorwomen named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-New England Region All-Star Team.

Mattoon returned to her high school alma mater for an alumni game over the weekend and went 3-for-4 with two singles and a triple.

"It was a lot of fun to watch her play again," said Oakers coach Chris Daigneault. "I kind of forgot what it was like to watch a player play the game and have an absolute blast doing it. It seems like most players today don't enjoy it as much as they should."
