Barrington leads in quest for third straight golf title
CRANSTON - Barrington took a major step toward its third straight state team golf title as the Eagles forged a 16-stroke lead over second place Hendricken in the first round of the 36-hole R.I. Interscholastic League state golf tournament Tuesday at Cranston Country Club.
A pair of two-over 73s by Ed Hjerpe and Jeff Ray led the Eagles to a four-player total of 301. Hendricken was second at 317 and East Greenwich was third at 320.
As the top three finishers among the 16-team tournament qualifiers the Eagles, Hawks and Avengers will return to Cranston CC Wednesday for the final round.
The state individual title also will be decided Wednesday. Toll Gate's Tyler Cook was the first round leader with an even-par 71. Cook will begin the final round one stroke ahead of East Greenwich's John McCarthy. A score of 81 or better earned a total of 26 players a chance to play in Wednesday's second round of the individual tourney.
