Seven R.I. women shine at NEWMAC meet
Seven former Rhode Island high school track stars helped Wheaton to a third-place finish at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships at Mount Holyoke College Saturday.
Freshman Mickey Jusme of Providence (Classical) broke the meet record for the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 3/4 inch, an NCAA provisional qualifying distance. She was second in the long jump with a distance of 17-11 1/2, a provisional qualifier.
Freshman Tope Waheed of East Providence shattered the Wheaton record in the hammer with a throw of 159-1, 16 feet farther than her previous best. She finished second and is a provisional qualifier for the NCAA meet.
Sophomore Laurenmaria Smith of Providence (Hope) and freshman Lauren Cardarelli of Cranston (La Salle) ran legs on the winning 4x400 relay, which posted a provisional qualifying time of 3:55.85, about 10 seconds faster than the second-place team. Smith also finished second in the 100 dash.
Other second-place finishers included Christine Moreau of Lincoln in the 400 hurdles, sophomore Erin Neville of North Providence (La Salle) in the high jump and freshman Didine Jusme of Providence (Classical) in the 100 hurdles.
The Lyons will compete at the New Englands Saturday at Springfield College.
