NEWMAC recognizes local athletes at Wheaton
Two former Rhode Island high school athletes have earned conference recognition for their performances for the Wheaton College track and baseball teams.
Freshman Mickey Jusme of Providence (Classical) is the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference field athlete of the week for the period ending Sunday. She finished second in the triple jump at the Springfield College Invitational, her distance of 39 feet, 4 inches just one-half inch shy of automatically qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She is a provisional qualifier.
Jusme won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 4 1/4 inches, and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay. She and the rest of the Lyons will compete for their 12th NEWMAC title at the outdoor championships Saturday at Mount Holyoke College.
Senior Josh Simmons (Cranston West) was the NEWMAC pitcher of the week for the period ending April 12. The closer appeared in three games that Wheaton won, threw four scoreless innings, allowed three hits, struck out seven and picked up two saves.
Simmons has appeared in 15 games for the Lyons, allowed 2 earned runs, struck out 29 batters in 19.2 innings and has an ERA of 0.92. Wheaton is 26-7 and ranked third in the nation by D3baseball.com.
