Former R.I. high schoolers pace CCRI to Region XXI softball title

The CCRI's sports information department provides this recap of the softball team's sweep of the Region XXI Championship today in Warwick:

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team defeated the Lady Warriors of Massasoit Community College in The Region XXI Championship winning the first two games of a best of three series 16-0 and 2-1. With the victories the Lady Knights improve to 14-2 on the season winning their 14th game in a row while finishing undefeated in Region XXI for the second straight year.

Game one saw Courtney St.Germain (Lincoln, RI) set the CCRI All-time shutout mark with her 9th career shutout. St. Germain pitched five dominant innings allwing just three hits and striking out eight. Courtney was light-out and had plenty of offense to keep her comfortable.

Offensively Nicole Kufel (Riverdell, NJ) went 4-4 with two doubles, two singles, four RBI and three runs scored followed by Stephanie Morse (Warwick, RI) who went 3-3 with a double, two singles a walk, two RBI and two runs scored and Kaela-Rose Gentile (Glocester, RI) was 3-4 with a double, two singles, an RBI and four runs scored to lead the 13-hit Lady Knight attack.

Game two saw Casey Doyle (Warwick, RI) get the start she gave up one run on one hit, walking three and striking out one. Doyle left with a 2-1 lead and was relieved by Marian Long (Warwick, RI) who was excellent over 4 1/3 innings allowing no runs on just one hit striking out five to get the victory. Doyle and Long combined to throw a two-hitter setting the tone for the Lady Knights in the second game.

Offensively Nicole Kufel continued her career day as a Lady Knights going 2-3 including the eventual game-winning two run home run in the top of the third inning adding a single. that brought her Championship perfomance to 6-7 on the day including a home run, two doubles, three singles, five RBI and four runs scored! That was ll the offense that Doyle and Long needed to secure the victory.

The Lady Knights will host the Northeast District Tournament next Weekend at Winslow Park in Warwick game times and schedule TBD.
