Former Cranston West teammates could be mound opponents

Two former Cranston West baseball teammates could be involved in an interesting college baseball mound duel Wednesday when Eastern Connecticut and Wheaton meet in an important New England Division III game in Norton, Mass.

Matt Fontaine, who earned All-State honors as a third baseman and pitcher for Cranston West in 2006, is one of the top three starting pitchers for Eastern Connecticut while his former Falcons teammate Josh Simmons is the top reliever for Wheaton.

Going into this week's action Fontaine (3-1) had pitched more innings than any other Eastern pitcher as he compiled 2.58 ERA in 38 1/3 innings on the mound. Simmons is one of the top Division III relievers in the country with a 0.92 ERA in 19 2/3 innings of relief.

Eastern Connecticut and Wheaton shared the No. 3 spot in this week's New England Division III college baseball poll.
