Former Barrington All-State clinches tennis title for RWU

Freshman Jeff DeNunzio of Barrington clinched The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's tennis championship for Roger Williams University Saturday with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Charlie Normington of Salve Regina University at the Mt. Hope High School courts in Bristol.

RWU defeated SRU, 5-2, for its first TCCC tennis title and qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament, starting Friday.The Hawks are 17-6 and were 9-0 in TCCC prior to the tournament.

DeNunzio rallied from a 4-6, 1-4 deficit and won 11 of the last 12 games at No. 3 singles. He was first-team All-State at Barrngton High School last year.

RWU senior Jeffrey Agonia also celebrated the Hawks triumph, which snapped Salve Regina's seven-year run as TCCC champion. He played No. 3 doubles with Ryan Kim and lost a hard-fought 8-5 decision to junior Steve Masso of North Scituate and senior Collin Cunningham. Agonia was an All-Division tennis player at Lincoln High.and received honorable mention in TCCC voting in 2007.

Masso also plays No. 4 singles for the Seahawks and was on the court when DeNunzio completed his comeback. He and David Lange were tied 4-4 in the third set. Masso played for Bishop Hendricken and was first-team All-State in 2006.
