Last year's All-Staters, this year's college stars
Two members of last year's Providence Journal All-Star baseball team haven't wasted any time establishing their credentials as outstanding college players.
Anthony Meo, a first team All-State pitcher in both 2007 and 2008 while playing for Cranston West, has played a big role in Costal Carolina University's 18-2 start so far this season.
Meo has seen duty as both a starter and reliever as he has posted a 3-0 record and a 1.83 ERA in 19 2/3 innings on the mound so far. One of his victories came in a start against West Virginia two weeks ago. He latest outing was two innings of shutout relief in a 7-2 victory over Winthrop on Friday. He has given only four earned runs while striking out 22 and walking only 11.
Milan Adams, whose performance as the All-State catcher helped Hendricken win the state baseball championship last spring, has helped the URI baseball team get off to a great start this season.
Adams was expected to be the Rams backup catcher in his first season in Kingston, but injuries to other players put him in the starting lineup and he has responded to challenge.
In 10 starts so far he is hitting .361 with 13 hits in 36 trips. He had two hits in four plate appearances in URI's 11-7 victory over George Washington on Friday. The victory upped the Rams record to 11-5 this season.
The Rams, who have a total of nine former R.I. Interscholastic League players on the roster, already have posted victories over three nationally ranked teams this season, Miami, Ohio State and Oklahoma St.
In addition to the nine former Rhode Island high school players on the roster, the Rams are coach by Jim Foster, the former Hendricken All-State catcher and Providence College baseball star.
