Andrew Springer wins national title in 1-mile race

Westerly High School's Andrew Springer yesterday won the 1-mile race at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston, completing the mile in 4:08.47. The time was a new state record for the indoor mile and the fastest time run in the United States this year. Springer bested Pat McGregor of Hoover, Ala., and Mac Fleet of San Diego, in less than a second.

Springer also finished fifth in the 2-mile run, with a time of 9:06.25.

Nick Ross of East Greenwich finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run, with a time of 15:13.13. Mike Gama of Bishop Hendricken was third in the weight throw, at 22.18 meters, and Joshua Faboyede of Classical was eighth, at 19.79 meters. Westerly's distance medley relay team (Tim O'Loughlin, C.J. Sanchez, John DiGangi, Springer and Alex Phelps) was eighth with a time of 10:16.79.

On the girls side, Eryn Wheeler of Coventry, was fifth in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:13.28. Molly Keating of La Salle was second in the freshman 1-mile run, with a time of 5:14.09, followed by La Salle teammate Emily Papazian, who was third at 5:14.77. Classical's Angela Onye was 10th in the weight throw, at 13.98 meters.

Toll Gate's 1600 sprint relay team (Lauren Cranston, Rylee Candon, Jordan Gray, Samantha Chace and Li Lian Lang) finished seventh in 4:10.59.
