Meet record for Springer in 3,000
It's another record for Andrew Springer. The Westerly senior has won the boys 3,000 in a meet-record time of 8:33.96, bettering former St. Raphael star Andrew Butler's previous meet record of 8:36.9 set in 1989.
East Greenwich junior Nick Ross led through 12 laps, but Springer was right on his heels, matching Ross stride for stride. Springer then overtook Ross with three laps to go and steadily widened his lead. Ross held on for second with a time of 8:39.96. La Salle senior Connor Mercurio took third in 8:40.94, followed by Westerly senior Tim O'Loughlin in 8:52.40.
Springer's time is the second fastest clocked in the U.S. this season. He also holds the #1 time of 8:27.21, which he ran en route to his 3,000-meter victory at the Brown Invitational.
