Four in a a row for Cranston West, Giblin
LINCOLN -- The Cranston West wrestling team became only the second team in Interscholastic League history to win four consecutive state titles with a thrilling 188-185 victory over Cumberland.
The state title wasn't decided until the final match, and Cranston West heavyweight John Coleman needed double-overtime to beat Narragansett's Shane Smith, 2-1.
Cranston West superstar Shawn Giblin, meanwhile, became only the second grappler in Interscholastic League history to win four Rhode Island state titles in a row.
He pinned his 140-pound opponent in 36 seconds and was awarded the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament for his efforts.
Giblin pinned all four of his state tournament opponents.
