Even URI men's basketball coach Jim Baron had to stand outside in the rain waiting to get a seat for Tuesday's night Hendricken-Mt. Pleasant high school basketball game at Mount Pleasant.
Baron, whose son Billy is the leading scorer for Hendricken, was part of a group of about 50 fans who were still outside when school officials and police closed the door leading into the school shortly before the scheduled 7:30 tip-off because the gym was overcrowed.
Baron and the other fans patiently waited about a half-hour in a light rain, but eventually were admitted to the gym after a few fans left following the junior varsity game and school officials also were able to create more seating by squeezing the fans closer together in the stands. Fortunately the Coach and the other fans didn't miss any of the action because the start of the varsity game was delayed until about 8 o'clock.
