Two fundraisers have been planned to support the Jamie Coyle Fund, established through Citizens Bank to help raise money for 12-year-old Cumberland hockey player Jamie Coyle, who suffered a stroke while playing in a tournament on Aug. 9.

Friday at midnight is the deadline for major-league teams to sign their picks from the spring's first-year player draft, and the Boston Red Sox remain without a deal to suit up Portsmouth High School graduate Ryan Westmoreland. According to a roundup of unsigned draft choices on the Baseball America Web site, Westmoreland may get a seven-figure signing bonus.

High school runners competing for the titles of "King and Queen of the Road" at Saturday's inaugural Bobby Doyle Summer Classic 5-Mile Road Race, Saturday in Narragansett, will be among some rather impressive company.
