Their events will not be contested at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Indoor Track & Field State Championships on Saturday, but triple jumpers, long jumpers and pole vaulters will still have a chance to battle for state supremacy.

They will have their chance to shine on Sunday at the inaugural R.I. All-State Jump Fest, also to be held at the Providence Career & Technical Academy's track and field facility beginning at 10 a.m.

The RIIL-sanctioned event is being sponsored by the R.I. Track Coaches Association with the support of the Bill Falk Fund/R.I. Track & Field Foundation. Although these are "exhibition" events and non-scoring competitions, they are being used to determine the Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity state champions in the triple jump, long jump and pole vault.

Also on Sunday at the PCTA track, Classical High School will be sponsoring a weight throw development meet in conjunction with the Jump Fest.

"This is all in the spirit of track development and the betterment of our sport," said Bob Palazzo, head coach of Classical's boys and girls indoor track teams, as well as the president of the R.I. Track and Field Coaches Association.

They won Toll Gate's 2010 Winter Blast, then came back a week later and captured the Ram Rumble Cheerleading Invitational, as well.

Now the Portsmouth competition cheerleading team will be taking a break from competition to host its 2010 Cheerleading Invitational, Saturday at the Portsmouth High School Field House Gym, with the high school division competing in the morning session.

"We have a full slate with all the islanders participating for the first time - Middletown, Newport, Tiverton," said Portsmouth coach Deb Valente, whose Patriots will not compete Saturday since they are serving as hosts, but will instead perform an exhibition. "We have about 16 high school teams and 7 middle school teams, 12 all-star teams, 2 college teams and 2 recreation teams participating. So it will be a busy day at Portsmouth High School next week."

It will be a busy weekend of cheerleading, as the Warwick Veterans Memorial High School 2010 Hurricane Cheer & Dance Invitational, which was originally scheduled for earlier this month, will take place Sunday (Feb. 7) in the large gym at Warwick Vets. The high school division for that event also will be contested during the morning session, along with the junior high division.

Phok, a senior captain, took first in the high school boys' weight throw with a heave of 63 feet, 9.5 inches. Onye, also a senior captain, placed second in the girls' weight throw with a toss of 49-1.

"Even with its storied tradition in track and field, this was a first for our school," Classical track coach Bob Palazzo said of the invitation Phok and Onye received to the prestigious meet. "They both represented Rhode Island very well."

Hillary Anderson will be continuing her field hockey career at Providence College. The four-time All-Stater and NFHCA All-Region selection from Barrington has accepted a field hockey scholarship offer from PC and signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.

A co-captain and forward for Barrington, the senior led the league in assists with 19 last fall and was third in total points during the regular season, then guided the Eagles to the Division I Championship, netting both goals in their triple-overtime victory over East Greenwich in the title game.

Anderson will be reunited with former Barrington teammate Julie Ruggieri, who is now a junior at PC and helped the Friars to a 10-10 record and a Big East semifinal appearance last fall.

North Kingstown defeats Bishop Hendricken, 55-52

MIKE SZOSTAK
Journal Sports Writer

WARWICK - Aaron Thomas has coached boys basketball at North Kingstown High School for 13 years, and Wednesday night was the first time he left Bishop Hendricken with a victory.

The Skippers (10-1, 11-3) combined their customary three-point prowess with tough play near the basket and pinned a 55-52 loss on the previously undefeated Hawks (9-1, 10-1) in the Providence Journal's Game of the Week and probably the Rhode Island Interscholastic League's Game of the Year so far.

"I've never won in this building, and we've probably played here seven times," Thomas said after the battle between the Division I South and West leaders. A capacity crowd packed the Ray Pepin Gymnasium and cheered both teams through a ho-hum first half and a second half that was worth every penny of admission.

Few teams win in Hawk territory. Central Catholic, the Lawrence, Mass., team that will visit Sunday, was the last, in 2008. Hendricken coach Jamal Gomes needed a minute to think of the last Rhode Island team to win here before mentioning Hope three years ago.

"To be the best you have to beat the best," Thomas said, a reference to the six-time defending state champion Hawks.

"I give all the credit to North Kingstown," Gomes said. "They got out and defended our guards and out-toughed us today. They man-handled us on the boards. How many second-chance opportunities did they have?"

The answer is a lot, especially in the second half, when the Skippers scored their first four baskets on easy offensive rebounds and layups. Derryck Kilgore, NK's 6-4 forward, scored two of those baskets en route to leading the Skippers with 16 points. Guard Tom DeCiantis provided the outside scoring with 15 points on four treys and three free throws. Guards James Factor and Robert Hazard each finished with eight points.

Bryan Vachon led the Hawks with 15 points, 10 in the second half. Nick Manning added 13.

North Kingstown enjoyed the biggest lead of the night, 40-34, but the Hawks rallied, tied the score at 45-45 on Vachon's pull-up jump shot from the free-throw line and went ahead, 48-45, on Sam Morgan's short shot and Tim Lyons' free throw with 3:29 to play. Hendricken seemed poised to take control.

North Kingstown reserve guard Tom Stacom, one of three former Hawks now playing for the Skippers, saved the night for NK when he sank a three-pointer from the left corner with 2:58 to play, got fouled in the process and calmly sank the free throw for a 49-48 lead. DeCiantis followed with a trey from the same spot for a 52-48 advantage, and Kilgore made yet another put-back of an offensive rebound for a 54-50 lead with 30.1 seconds to play. After a Morgan tip-in made it 54-52, Kilgore sank a free throw with 13.7 seconds left for a 55-52 NK lead.

Manning missed a three-point shot with about six seconds to play, and after an officials' timeout to sort out a clock problem, the Hawks had one more shot to tie the score. Steve Bevilaqua got a feed from Ryan Palumbo, got a good look from the left of the lane, launched a shot at the buzzer and hit the rim.

"If we have another game with them, I think it will be a great game," Thomas said.

NORTH KINGSTOWN (55): Robert Hazard 3 0-0 8, Robbie Walkler-Willians 1 0-0 2, Tom DeCiantis 4 3-4 15, Derryck Kilgore 7 2-4 16, James Factor 1 3-4 8, Tom Stacom 1 1-1 4, Ben Scott 1 0-1 2.
